Hanover County and Henrico County are some of the oldest counties in the United States.
Hanover County is located in the Piedmont of Virginia and it was created in 1719 from the area of New Kent County called St. Paul's Parish. It was the birthplace and home of noted American statesman Patrick Henry as well as the birthplace of Henry Clay.
Until 1842, the City of Richmond was officially part of Henrico County. The City of Richmond is surrounded by Henrico County to the west, north, and east. It is bordered by the Chickahominy River to the north and the James River and Richmond to the south.
The Richmond International Raceway (RIR) is located in the central portion of Henrico County near Mechanicsville and the Richmond International Airport (RIA) is located in the eastern portion in Sandston. Private employers in Henrico include large companies such as Capital One, Bon Secours Richmond Health System, and Anthem.
